How to Set Up Streaming Hold Music on Vodia

Streaming music to your Vodia PBX server is now easier with Easy On Hold®. This works across all domains if you are using the Vodia multi-tenant PBX, or if your Vodia PBX is on-premises.

01

Start a streaming on-hold service account for Vodia

To start configuring your Easy On Hold® services with Vodia, you need an account. Request a streaming hold music account, and Easy On Hold® will provide you with an IP and port where the streaming services will be activated. Vodia will be listening on that particular port assigned on the PBX.

02

Open the firewall for the streaming port

If you have an active firewall, you will need to allow the Easy On Hold® streaming port in your firewall rule. Example: 40000/UDP.

03

Create the music on hold source at Administrator level

Navigate to Customize → Music on hold. Choose the following settings, then save the configuration:

  • Name: Name of the streaming service
  • Type: RTP stream
  • Domain: All, or you can choose a domain
  • Port: Port number for Easy On Hold®
  • aCodec: Big Endian format
04

Assign the source, then manage content in the portal

Save the configuration. At tenant level, go to Settings → General settings → Music on hold and choose the Easy On Hold® source. After the RTP stream is connected, manage music and messages from the Easy On Hold® Cloud Portal. Changes are heard immediately, or they can be scheduled with custom start and stop dates. You do not keep uploading replacement files to Vodia.

Vodia Streaming Hold Music FAQs

Why a live RTP stream is preferred to looping music-on-hold files on Vodia.

Vodia can play a stored file in an endless loop, take audio from a wave input, or receive a live RTP stream. Easy On Hold® uses the RTP stream path so callers hear a continuously updated mix of licensed music and professionally managed messages instead of a file that restarts from the beginning. Marketing teams change content in the Easy On Hold® portal instead of exporting, uploading, and swapping files.

No. File-based music on hold on Vodia loops audio placed in the audio_moh directory and can consume about 1 MB of memory per minute of audio. Easy On Hold® sends a live RTP stream to a port on the PBX, so there is no file to upload, no time limit, and no file size limit.

Easy On Hold® provides an IP and port. Vodia listens on that port for an RTP stream (Type: RTP stream). No SIP signaling is involved, and Vodia does not send RTP back. Set the codec to Big Endian format as shown in the Vodia Create MoH Source dialog, typically Linear 16 bit/sample 8 kHz mono (Big Endian).

If you have an active firewall, allow the Easy On Hold® streaming port in your firewall rules. The example used in the Vodia setup is 40000/UDP. Easy On Hold® assigns the specific port for your stream.

Yes. Streaming works across all domains if you are using the Vodia multi-tenant PBX, or if your Vodia PBX is on-premises. When you create the MoH source you can set Domain to All, or choose a specific domain. Easy On Hold® streams in unicast mode, so the same stream can be shared across a multi-tenant PBX.

Yes. Streaming audio content can be shared across multiple call groups, or uniquely assigned to each of many call groups such as sales, support, and regions. Multiple Easy On Hold® streams can be provisioned when teams need different programming.

Customers control stream content from a personalized control panel. Changes are heard immediately on the stream, or they can be scheduled with custom start and stop dates. Promotions and announcements play only when they should, so a stale uploaded file does not keep looping after a campaign ends.

Yes. Emergency messages can be quickly turned on, with an automatic stop date, for a particular queue. You do not wait on a new file upload to the Vodia PBX.
