  • Music On Hold: Can I Get A Little Respect In 2012?

Posted on December 20th, 2011 in Easy On Hold | Comments Off

“What type of business do you have?” asked my new acquaintance. “We make the messages–you know, the audio people hear while they are on hold,” I proudly smiled back. “You mean the, ‘please hold your call is important’ on hold messages?” I hesitated, then shot back, “Well, ours are the good ones. On hold music and messages have changed since the elevator music days.” But inevitably, the conversation dies at the thought of the dreaded on hold greeting that falsely purports that every caller is somehow a priority. What I do for a living is a real killer at holiday parties.

By the way, happy holidays and Merry Christmas. We’re wrapping up 2011 with high hopes that 2012 will be the year the image of the old phony on-hold message is finally replaced with the true vision of marketing messages on hold that inspire, inform and motivate callers. That’s what we offer here at Easy On Hold!

We’ve dedicated a good deal of time developing scripting protocols aimed at improving hold content, including:

    • Focusing on the callers’ needs
    • Communicating to the callers’ point of view
    • Using comfortable language and avoiding “corp-speak”
    • Digging to find out what callers are looking for, and satisfying their curiosity about the company they’ve called

Music On Hold Message content can be compelling!

In 2012, Easy On Hold will be continuing to upgrade our facility. In the last year we put our new recording studio in operation, utilizing new technology and isolated voiceover recording room. We’ll be revamping the website and providing more information for online access than ever before. We’ve been setting up a very sophisticated new customer relationship management system that will improve communications with clients and generate meticulous tasks for Easy On Hold staff to complete, in an effort to raise the bar on customer service. We’ve strengthened our relationships with equipment manufacturers, streamlined delivery processes, built a bigger, more specialized staff of music on hold experts and signed a new agreement with BMG music, covering performance rights on a bigger, better, newer library of music.

It all adds up, we expect, to a year of very high-quality productions and strong customer relationships–so those on hold messages will inspire, inform and motivate callers. Maybe then, we’ll be able to change the public perception of messages on hold. Maybe then we’ll get a little respect. High hopes for 2012.

    Happy new year.

Battling Trademark and Copyright Infringement in the Music On Hold Industry

Posted on December 2nd, 2010 in Easy On Hold | Comments Off

In the Internet age, you can’t be certain who is using your name–a valuable asset. While we work hard to build a quality brand, name recognition and reputation, there are some businesspeople who would like to “borrow” what we’ve built to help themselves.

An example is the use of a brand name in keywording. When a website owner creates his site, he puts specific keywords in the title and other meta tags to get higher search engine rankings. Using established brand names, they believe, will give them legitimacy. Perhaps, too, they think that their site will pop up when in fact online shoppers are looking for the more established brand.

The Easy On Hold (r) Trademark has shown up in text on Craigs List ads, Ebay Ads, Website title tags and even in a url. Currently, a music on hold company in Oklahoma is using a site they call “easy on hold updates”. Clearly, they’re attempting to pull some attention from those searching for Easy On Hold.

    Borrowing Content
Believe it or not, several websites have been built using large chunks of copy directly from the Easy On Hold website. This type of plagiarism is common, as many sites are built by “off-shore” companies that crank out sites using content from the quickest, easiest source.

If your website was built by someone who does not work within your firm, or by someone who does not share your high standards and values, look into checking for duplicate content at other sites (then determine who borrowed from whom). Easy On Hold uses Copyscape.

When we enter our URL in the Copyscape engine, the search for plagiarized content begins.  As for today’s results, we see that a chunk of our home page copy is in use by a company called Dynamic Media. The illustration here shows actual screen shots from Dynamic Media (top) and Easy On Hold (bottom).

Content from the Easy On Hold site is also being used by a company called Premier Communications. In fact, it turns out that much of their FAQ came from Easy On Hold’s content. Much of it word for word. Funny, isn’t it, to see that on their site they have put the phrase “copyright 2010 Premier Communications”. Do you think this is stealing? Is it legal? Is there anything that can be done?

    Corp Magazine Article
Authors Anna K. and Kevin J. Heinl have posted an interesting article about infringement.

Companies have an affirmative duty to police the Internet for infringement of their intellectual property Companies may want to establish or bolster existing monitoring methods in order to prevent their copyright-protected content or counterfeit trademarked goods from appearing on YouTube, eBay and other websites.

One angle they talk about is going after the ISP (Internet Service Provider) that hosts the infringing site.

Stopping Infringement of Valuable Copyrights and Trademarks on the Internet Intellectual property owners are required to provide more than “generalized notice” that their works are being infringed. The rights holder must provide the ISP with a specific website address that was valued to be “information reasonably sufficient to permit the service provider to locate the material.” An ISP is only responsible for taking down postings if an intellectual property owner notifies the ISP that a specific posting infringes its copyright or trademark.

Another site, operated by Watts Group, Inc.,  is using the exact same wording as Premier Communications and Easy On Hold in their FAQ.

It’s frustrating to go through the pain and expense of testing copy and tweaking and then find that someone else is benefiting illegally. Obviously, we have acquired the services of a legal firm specializing in intellectual property rights to pursue the problem.

How To Update Your Browser To Take Advantage Of Easy On Hold Features

Posted on September 28th, 2010 in How To Tips | Comments Off

The wide world of web browsing is constantly changing. It makes sense that the tool we use to get on the Internet, the web browser, change as well. Many web sites, including Easy On Hold, have been designed with new features that make your online experience safer and more productive. However, your old browser may not be in tune with these new features. You’ll want to keep up with the latest versions of your web browser.

    INTERNET EXPLORER
About 52% of visitors to Easy On Hold are using “the blue e”, Internet Explorer by Microsoft. Microsoft updates their browser software constantly
and it’s up to you to stay current. The good news is, updating a browser is pretty simple.

Update Windows from your All Programs menu

    1. Click on the Microsoft Start Button
    2. Choose All Programs
    3 Choose Windows Update
A Menu of available updates will appear. This list should include the newest Internet Explorer updates for better browser functionality. Follow the prompts to download the updates.
    INTERNET EXPLORER 9 BETA
There’s a new version of Explorer being promoted now, but it is in BETA, which means it may not be 100% ready for prime time. Only use the beta if you have some computer savvy.

    FIREFOX
My personal choice for browsing is Mozilla Firefox. It is the second most popular browser used by visitors to Easy On Hold. Updating Firefox is darned easy. Go here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ie.html and click the icon for the latest version. Follow the simple setup. Firefox is a very secure and dependable browser.

    GOOGLE CHROME
The newest browser brand on the market is Google Chrome (yes, that Google). It seems to make sense that they get into the browser game, too. Go here: http://www.google.com/chrome This is a nice clean looking browser that my 8th grade son uses and that’s enough of an endorsement for me.
    SAFARI
Apple has long been offering its own browser, called Safari. If you’ve ever downloaded iTunes or Quicktime, you’ve probably seen Safari or may have even downloaded it. If you’re on a Mac, you can use a variety of browsers, but the one that looks the most like the rest of your applications will be Safari. Go here: http://www.apple.com/safari/download/ to get it.
    OTHERS
There are other browsers, namely Opera, Avant, Netscape and more (check the list here). Whichever browser you choose, keeping it up do date will definitely enhance your online experience and allow you to take full advantage of our site and many others.
